How to Offer A Course - Start to Finish

  1. Register your course with Base Medical

First step, register your course with our Course Administration team to register your course. This form is found in the Instructor Resource Area or here.

You will need to submit the following information when filling out the Course Request form:

  • Course Certification Level (see below for more info)

  • Start and End Dates of the Practical Training

  • Instructor Information

  • Venue Information

  • If the course is open for public enrollment. If so, the price of the course will be needed, as well as a link to share with the public for sign-up.

The Course Administration team will register your course and create a Custom Course Link (CCL).  The CCL is the link that you, as the instructor, will share with students to sign up. This link will give students free access to the online lessons unless requested otherwise.

For any questions or special needs, email Course Admin at admin@base-medical. com.

Base Medical requires instructors to have one certification above the certification level they are teaching. Wilderness First Responders can teach WFA. EMTs and above can teach WFR. Instructors with their Wilderness First Responder certification can still lead or assist with WFR courses. However, there must be an instructor with an EMT license or above present to be sure medical information is being conveyed appropriately.

If you are approved to only teach WFA course but want to offer a WFR course (either an initial certification or recertification) then you may consider recruiting another Base Medical instructor. There may be some instructors in your area or willing to travel to assist with a course. To contact other instructors, use the Instructor Directory available on the Instructor Resource Area. Negotiating payment, travel, etc, will be between you and the other instructor.

3. Student payment, Sign up, and Access

Student Payment and Enrollment Communication

Payment Confirmation and Enrollment

Course pricing and payment is coordinated by instructors independently of Base Medical. In this case, student payment is made by the student to the instructor then shares a custom course sign up link with the student to enroll in a Base Medical course. We recommend placing the custom course sign up link in the confirmation message or email that the student will receive after successfully paying for the course. It is also helpful to remind student how the course will proceed, the details of the practical training, and what is required for the student.

Most payment platforms allow you to edit or customize the payment confirmation message. Be sure to update this message for each new course. Alternatively, you can email students the course sign up individually after they have paid. if you do this, we recommend making the student aware that there will be a delay between paying for the course and enrolling in the course.

The following text can be used as a message on the payment confirmation page or in an email after a student has paid you for a Base Medical course. Feel free to make edits or shorten this text to best fit your needs.

4. Manage student sign up and progress

Previously, each instructor could be given acess to monitor student sign up and progress. Unfortunately, our learning management system provider has limited this action. We are working on a solution. In the mean time, you can monitor student sign up and access the following way.

Log in to the learning platform with hte following:

Email: infor@basemedical.com

Password: Access4all!

You will see a list of courses. Find your course to see student sign up and progress. It’s helpul to send students reminder emails each week leading up to the course. Give students a realistic expectation about the time commitment required to complete the online lessons. Otherwise, they may think they can cram it last minute and be fine.

Student-to-Instructor Ratio

Our Student-to-Instructor Ration for practical training is 10 students to 1 instructor. This means that you can train up to ten students if you are teaching alone. If you are trying to facilitate a larger group of students, we recommend the following:

  1. Consider recruiting another Base Medical Instructor - There may be some instructors in your area or willing to travel to assist with a course. To contact other instructors, use the Instructor Directory available in the Instructor Resource Area. Negotiating payment, travel, etc., will be between you and the other instructor. Instructor candidates count as an additional instructor.

  2. Divide the group into separate training sessions - Let’s say you want to provide a one-day WFA practical training for 20 students, but you are the only instructor. You can divide this group into two WFA practical training sessions offered on two different days (such as one training on Saturday and one training on Sunday). Be sure to register these dates as individual course to receive a student sign-up link for each date.

5. Prepare your schedule and lesson plans

Drafting Your Course Schedule

The Instructor Resource Area provides a few template schedules that you may use to teach your courses. Feel free to use these templates as a starting base for you to work off of and build a course schedule that meets your unique needs.

Mandatory Topics and Minimum Time

When building a course schedule, you must include the mandatory training as defined by the SoE and meet the minimum time. However, you may include other topics at your discretion and decide to extend your practical training hours or break up the hours over a longer period of time.

The Active to Passive Ratio

The Active to Passive Ratio (A:P Ratio) is a measure of the amount of active learning compared to the amount of passive learning experienced by the students during a practical training. the A:P Ratio for all practical trainings, no matter the type, is 3:1

Lesson Plans

When designing your lesson plans, you must consider the knowledge and skills objectives as defined by the SoE. You must get your students to meet these objectives. But how you do it is up to you. Since most practical trainings are delivered in an outdoor setting, most instructors default to the lowest-tech option when it comes to delivering lessons. A whiteboard is enough for many instructors.

Stock Up on Your Supplies!

The equipment you will ultimately need will depend on the certification level you are teaching and the topics. Be sure to order your supplies early. You can find a recommended equipment list here or you can check the instructor store.

6. 1 Week before course start date

Be sure to email students one week before the start of the practical training to remind them about completing the online lessons and to share information about the practical training, such as dates, times, location, etc.

It’s a good idea to tell students to bring lunch and to be prepared to be outside. Include your contact information in the email for student issues on the day of the practical training.

7. Time To Teach!

Have fun!

8. Course Wrap Up

The Online Final Assessment

As the Instructor, it is up to you to share access to the Final Assessment after students have successfully completed the practical training. Send the final assessment link via email. Here is an example email to the students after they successfully complete the practical training session:

Congratulations on completing your practical training session! I enjoyed having you in the course.

The final step for you to receive your certification is to complete the online assessment and evaluation that is linked here: [FINAL ASSESSMENT]
