Janet Peterson, DrPH, RDN, RCEP, WEMT, FACSMDrPH, MA (Exercise Physiology), Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist, EMT-B, Wilderness Medicine Educator, FACSM, Professor of Health and Human Performance.
Janet has a diverse background in the areas of wilderness medicine, exercise physiology, nutrition, public health,teaching and research. She is a professor of health and human peformance. She peer reviews for the International Journal of Exercise Science, the Journal of Health Education Teaching, Journal of Strength and Conditioning and the Wilderness and Environmental Medicine Journal. She has experience as the Section Editor for Nutrition and Physical Activity for the Wilderness and Environmental Medicine Journal and currently writes for the Wilderness Medicine Magazine. Her latest published paper in the Wilderness and Environmental Medicine Journal is titled "High Altitude Illness: Knowledge, Practice and Attitudes of Porters in Nepal." For Base Medical, Janet spearheads research in wilderness medicine, program development, instructor training, teaching and learning, writing and reviewing curriculum, and instructing Base Medical courses around the world. When she is not conducting research or teaching, Janet can be found bike touring in remote places or dabbling in fiction writing.

Tim DurkinBase Medical Chief Medical Director, DO, FAAEM, CAQSM, Author, Emergency & Sports Medicine Physician
Dr. Durkin is a board-certified emergency & sports medicine physician. His career in wilderness medicine and rescue began in the early 90s as a summer camp staff member, and progressed as a SAR responder, EMT, CPR/First Aid instructor and later Paramedic. He attended medical school in Kentucky and internship in North Carolina. He completed residency in Emergency Medicine at Albert Einstein Medical Center, the busiest trauma center in Philadelphia. Since residency he has practiced emergency medicine at both large and small hospitals in the southwest. From 2009–2015, he was an active responder with Albuquerque Mountain Rescue Council in New Mexico, and served as both Vice President and later Medical Director. In 2015, he moved to Colorado and joined La Plata County Search & Rescue, and currently serves as Medical Director, as well as an active responder on their technical rescue, winter response, and helicopter deployment teams. He recently returned to Colorado after spending time at the University of Florida, where he completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine (Go Gators!) as well as taught and supervised residents in the emergency department at UF Health Shands Hospital, a 1,000 bed academic level 1 trauma center. He is the author of the Pocket Guide to Event, Outdoor and Sports Medicine and founder of Durango Sports Medicine, the region’s only independent, non-surgical sports medicine practice. Dr. Durkin splits his professional time between emergency department shifts, sports medicine practice, SAR work, and Base Medical. When not working, he enjoys backcountry skiing and trying to keep up with his wife while mountain biking.
