ADVANCING EDUCATION
EMPOWERING THE OUTDOOR COMMUNITY
Becoming a Base Medical Certified Education Center
Certifying as a Base Medical Education Center empowers organizations to provide high-quality, standardized wilderness medicine education that is affordable, profitable, flexible, and customizable. The Base Medical program is ideal for a variety of organizations, including for profit, larger non-profit groups, and smaller volunteer Search and Rescue (SAR) teams.
The process of certifying as a Base Medical Certified Education Center requires at least one member of the organization to certify as a Base Medical Instructor. The organization agrees to adhere to Base Medical’s Wilderness Medicine Blended Learning Standards. |

STANDARDIZED
The Base Medical wilderness medicine program adheres to Wilderness Medicine Blended Learning Standards, which includes the Scope of Education. The Scope of Education sets uniform objectives for each certification level. Our hybrid delivery model ensures that every student receives high quality education and meets set competencies.
AFFORDABLE
Base Medical charges a nominal per student base fee to the organization that varies per certification level. Currently, for the 2021 year the per student base fee for a Wilderness First Aid course is $55. An organization can provide WFA education training for their members for as low as $55 per member.
PROFITABLE
Organizations can opt to offer courses to their members only or to the public and establish their own pricing for wilderness medicine offerings. This pricing model allows organizations designated as a Base Medical Certified Education Center to leverage the Base Medical programs for fundraising or generating capital.
|
FLEXIBLE
Organizations set their own schedule for wilderness medicine education opportunities based on their unique needs. Courses may be scheduled, rescheduled, postponed, shifted to an alternate delivery model, or cancelled at any time. This is ideal for SAR groups in which a mission call out may interrupt a course or in the event of a local or national emergency such as a pandemic or wildfire.
CUSTOMIZED
Base Medical aims to meet the unique needs of the outdoor safety community. In addition to the standardized core curriculum, instructors can use elective curriculum topics to customize a course to meet student and organization needs.

Program Overview
Delivery Method
All courses delivered by a Base Medical Certified Education Center are in a hybrid format, incorporating the capabilities and advantages of online learning with professionally guided practical training by Base Medical Certified (BMC) Instructors. To offer a wilderness medicine course, an organization registers the course with Base Medical. Once a course is registered, the organization provides access for students to enroll and complete the required online lessons at their own pace, before attending the practical training session with the BMC instructor. During the practical training, BMC instructors guide student learning, teach to the Scope of Education, and ensure adherence to the wilderness medicine blended learning standards. Upon successful completion of the course, the BMC instructor issues student certifications by granting access to an online final assessment. The final assessment contains a course evaluation and final exam that students must pass with an 80% or higher. Once the final assessment is complete, the student is electronically issued a certification that is valid for two years. |
Becoming a Base Medical Certified Instructor
Instructor candidates have specific qualifications and experience in wilderness medicine and teaching. Instructor candidates complete an instructor training program, Base Medical onboarding session, and have their teaching evaluated over a minimum of two courses to receive Base Medical Certified Instructor Status. Organizations identify individuals interested in becoming certified as a Base Medical Instructor. Base Medical instructor trainers provide training and evaluation for the instructor candidates for a base fee per instructor candidate. The time required to become a Base Medical Certified Instructor depends on the depth of teaching/instructing experience of the individual. Instructor Candidates can apply here: |
Wilderness Medicine Blended Learning Standards
The Wilderness Medicine Blended Learning Standards (WM-BLS) ensure the delivery of high quality, standardized education that is ethically centered on the outdoor community to promote responsible change in the advancement of wilderness medicine education at the Wilderness First Aid (WFA), Wilderness First Responder (WFR), and Wilderness Emergency Technician levels. The WM-BLS foster education that is standardized, effective, evidence-based, equitable, accessible, and adaptable. The Scope of Education is an integral aspect of the WM-BLS as it outlines the core and elective curriculum objectives for each certification level. Learn more about the Scope of Education here. Base Medical Certified Instructors and Education Centers must comply with the Wilderness Medicine Blended Learning Standards when delivering a Base Medical certifying course. |
Recertification and Base Medical Affiliate Program
All Base Medical wilderness medicine certifications are valid for two years. Recertification is required to maintain a Base Medical certification. Students may be eligible to recertify online. Base Medical implements an alternating cycle of hands-on recertification to online recertification. This alternating cycle requirement means that students must participate in hands-on training every other recertification cycle. Hybrid courses (online combined with in person or remote hands on practical) qualify as hands-on training. Base Medical Certified Education Centers are designated as affiliates of Base Medical. Base Medical affiliates earn a percentage or pre-determined amount of each referral to select online Base Medical courses, including online recertification, specialty medical courses, and SAR education content. Therefore, if a student from an organization recertifies through Base Medical, 10% of the student course fees will be paid to the organization. Fees will be paid monthly to the organization. For organizations of significant size or following, these earnings can be substantial. Non-Base Medical Certified Education Centers can apply to become a Base Medical Affiliate here: Affiliate Application |
