Frequently Asked Questions
Here you can find more information about Base Medical. Feel free to contact us if you have other questions. We are here to help!
What standards do your recert courses meet?
Our courses are reviewed by the Wilderness Medical Society and meet the same high standards as traditional in-person courses.
My cert expired. Do you have a grace period?
Yes, we do! It differs for each level of recertification. For wilderness first aid it's 6 months. For wilderness first responder and WEMT or REMT it's 1 year.
Do I still need to renew my EMT with the state and National Registry if I take your recert course?
Yes, you still need to renew your EMT license with the state or NREMT. As with all wilderness recert courses, we only recertify the "W" in your WEMT.
My EMT license will expire and I do not plan to renew. Can I still recertify with your course to be a WEMT?
You can but the WEMT will be invalid without your EMT license. Therefore we suggest recertifying as Wilderness First Responder instead. It would be a step down from the WEMT, but you will not waste the initial investment in your WEMT training as you can upgrade to WEMT again if you were to become an EMT again. The WFR is also much easier to maintain.
Can I get Continuing Education credits for my EMT license by taking your course?
Not currently. However, we are in the process of obtaining Continuing Education Accreditation through CAPCE. It's coming soon!
Outdoor Safety Questions
Why should I take the Outdoor Safety Online course?
Evidence has shown that those with knowledge and awareness are much safer and more prepared to handle any wilderness emergency. This course will give you that knowledge and awareness. When things go wrong in the remote wilderness you will have to rely on your knowledge. It may just save a life.
I have no medical training, is the Outdoor Safety Online course right for me?
Yes, it is! We designed the Outdoor Safety Online course for those who have no medical background. From day hikers to extreme mountaineers, this course should be the foundation of safety how-to.
Why can I not gain my initial wilderness first aid certification through Base Medical?
Base Medical firmly believes that hands on training is a crucial part of the wilderness medicine. Therefore, we think it would be unethical to issue initial certification for WFA or WFR. We only issue recertification.
Will the Outdoor Safety Online course certificate give me the ability to treat patients?
No, it does not. You will receive a certificate in Outdoor Safety Awareness. Meaning you have the knowledge of Wilderness First Aid but not the hands on skills. Hands on training is necessary, so we suggest taking a Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder course. Base Medical will even help you find a course near you if you ask!
